2009 MMA Manifesto Fight of the Year

With another year almost in the books, it is time for The MMA Manifesto to hand out its Best of 2009 awards. Next up - Fight of the Year.

Without question, the hardest choice we had to make for The MMA Manifesto year-end awards was that of Fight of the Year. (although, it no doubt wasn't as hard as actually having to participate in one of those matches). It came down to four finalists - three from the WEC (Henderson-Cerrone, Torres-Mizugaki, Faber-Brown) and one from the UFC (Sanchez-Guida).

So why did we eventually go with the Ben Henderson-Donald Cerrone tilt from WEC 43? Numerous reasons. The fight was an important one, as it was for the WEC (interim) Lightweight Championship. The fight was action-packed through its full 25-minute duration. The match was so evenly fought that either fighter could have been given the decision. And, finally, it has some of the greatest submission escapes my eyes have ever seen.

Others worth noting: Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida, Mike Thomas Brown vs Urijah Faber, Miguel Torres vs Takeya Mizugaki.

Other 2009 award winners: Submission of the Year, Knockout of the Year.
